Russian socialite, entrepreneur and philanthropist Dasha Zhukova has been awarded the 2012 Leo Award by Independent Curators International (ICI). The award, named after the late dealer Leo Castelli, recognizes Ms. Zhukova for her ambitions to transform Moscow into a contemporary art hub through varios projects, including the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture.
The Garage Center has held 36 exhibitions since its launch in 2007, including shows of Antony Gormley, Mark Rothko, Ilya Kabakov and James Turrell.
In addition to founding the non-profit arts project, Ms. Zhukova has also launched Garage Magazine and serves as Creative Director of the online art database Art.sy.
Previous recipients of the Leo Award include Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, Christo & Jeanne-Claude and John Waters.

Dasha Zhukova is closely tied to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Until Zhukova curates relevant dissident art at her events, that is critical of the Putin regime, Zhukova cannot be taken seriously as an art innovator. Before handing her the Castelli award the ICI ought to raise questions about the source of her wealth and funding, and the constraints placed upon such by corrupt Kremlin insiders.
Re. Miss Zhukova’s wealth, see: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703421204576329420182131288.html ["Her father, Alexander Zhukov, an oil magnate originally from Moscow, who in 2001 was held for six months in an Italian jail on suspicion of smuggling arms to Bosnian insurgents . . ."].
IMO, the Art World is a pretty sleazy place.
