After announcing its preservation plans of a Jackson Pollock painting, Los Angeles’s Getty Center is again stepping up to the plate with the donation of €270.000 ($390,000) to the Prado Museum in Madrid for the restoration of a Rubens oil painting.
The work, The Triumph of the Eucharist over Idolatry, dates from 1625-26 and is one in a series of cartoons that were ultimately transformed into tapestries. The Prado has had the six-panel painting since its previous owner’s death in the 17th century, but time and improper intervention have caused deterioration in the form of cracks and bowing that could cause damage to the paint surface.
Seven Getty conservators will work alongside the Prado’s in-house conservator, José de la Fuente, as well as the Metropolitan Museum’s George Bisacca.
